Why buy a purebred dog from a Responsible Breeder?
People who get puppies from a responsible and conscientious breeder generally
feel honored to have the privilege of taking home a very special dog.
At the same time, these breeders usually charge less than getting a lower quality
dog from a pet store or similar source.
They usually have a higher concern for the well-being of puppies they have bred than for making money.
If fact, one does not show dogs in order to make money, but rather for the privilege of
having a positive influence on the development of their beloved breed.
They often have a waiting list before a litter
if born, and sometimes when the litter is in the planning stage.
Breeders who belong to breed clubs are aware of their role and responsibility in
essentially contributing to the "design" of a breed of dogs whose primary purpose
usually is to be a loved and loving family pet.
breed clubs are proactive with respect to addressing any health issues that become
present in their breed.
Most show breeders keep their dogs in the house as much loved family pets.
They have litters only occasionally, and are selective about who can have one of
their well cared for and precious puppies.
Conscientious breeders are scrupulous about health clearances for any dog bred,
and only breed dogs who are judged superior examples of the breed.
They only do breedings with the purpose of improving their breed,
and intend for the most promising puppies in each litter to be shown.
They would never knowingly breed a dog with a significant genetic defect.
They are very knowledgable about the characteristics and requirements of the breed,
and are usually available for consultation for the lifetime of the dog,
often becoming friends with their puppy buyers.
They invariably have a deep love and abiding respect for their chosen breed.
Most such breeders have a lifetime guarantee that they will take a dog back if necessary.
Older Dogs
Show breeders are limited on how many dogs they can keep and give the amount of attention and training they deserve.
Thus it is not uncommon to find themselves in a situation where they need to place an older or adult dog in a loving home.
Sometimes these are retired champions, sometimes a dog who didn't like showing, or somehow didn't fulfill
the promise seen as a puppy.
Sometimes a dog is returned by another family who's circumstances changed.
These dogs are wonderful pets, and even have certain advantages over taking a puppy.
Rescue
All breeds have active rescue operations.
Making a difference in the life of a rescued dog can be a rewarding experience.
These dogs are always screened carefully for suitability as a pet, often living for months with a knowledgable breeder
to be sure they are sound and well. We urge you to support breed rescue efforts.
To find out about available rescue dogs of a breed, go to
Breed Central.
For many breeds there is a rescue link there.
If not, click on the National Breed Club. In almost every case there is a link to the rescue organizaiton
from the National Breed Club website.
